The Parks & Community Services Department offers a wide variety of programs for youth and kids which encourage a positive leisure lifestyle through dance, sports, arts and other enrichment activities. Recreation programs provide opportunities for socialization, personal growth, physical activity, and character building and integrity development. Salinas Police Department Cadet Program
The Salinas Police Department
Police Cadet is a part-time, paid position within the department for high school or college students who are pursuing a career as a sworn
police officer.
A Police Cadet must be 16 - 23 years of age, enrolled full-time in high school or in college and must be enrolled in at least six semester units or eight quarter units, maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, and agree to conduct themselves in accordance with Salinas Police Department Policy concerning on-duty and off-duty conduct.
Police Cadets work 20 hours a week in a variety of law enforcement functions traditionally performed by the sworn police officer. Duties include issuing parking citations, identifying and towing abandoned vehicles, completing non-priority police reports and traffic investigations, traffic control, and working special events such as the California Airshow
and the California Rodeo.
Of the six Cadets currently assigned to the Salinas Police Department, five are currently
in college and one is in high school. The Cadets are supervised by Sergeant Jay Malispina of the Community Services Unit. For more information, please call Sgt. Malispina at

Sports
The Parks & Community Services Department offers a variety of youth sports programs throughout the year. These programs utilize a number of athletic facilities located in Salinas including, local school facilities. We strive to improve the quality of life of Salinas’ residents through programs that foster teamwork and build self-esteem and leadership skills, while providing an outlet for physical activity and socialization.
