Firefighters play a vital role in our community. The Salinas City Fire Department is responsible for protecting life, property and the environment from the hazards of fire, explosions and hazardous materials incidents. The Fire Department also provides emergency paramedics who are trained to provide advanced life support. Fire crews are often the first persons to arrive at the scene of any incident in the City. They have the skills and confidence to perform effectively in emergency situations protecting the lives and property of the residents. The Fire Department also educates the public in fire safety and prevention, and enforces safety codes designed to provide a healthier and more secure environment for all.

Salinas City Limits cover approximately 19.25 square miles. The Salinas Fire Department presently has six stations. Salinas City has a contract with the Salinas Rural Fire District to provide fire protection services to a portion of their Fire Protection District. This brings the total protection area for Salinas City to approximately 35 square miles.

The department operates with three platoons, (A, B and C). Each platoon has Engine Companies that are made up of Captains, Engineers, Firefighters, and Paramedics and are the initial respondents to calls to 911 for help. Each platoon has a Battalion Chief who commands the personnel on duty for their respective shifts. In 2004 these teams responded to over 10,343 calls with a minimum of 23 personnel assigned each day. Total suppression staffing for the Fire Department is 87.

The department staffs six fire pumpers including a quint with a 75 foot ladder, one 100 foot ladder truck, and one paramedic rescue squad. A Hazardous Materials Team is made up of trained specialists on duty at Station 1. There is also a special Dry-Chem unit at Station 4 to respond to airport emergencies. There are three patrols available for vegetation fires. There are also four reserve engines.

The departments paramedics respond to all 911 calls for medical assistance. The department went to 6,255 medical emergency calls in 2004 with a minimum daily staffing of four paramedics on duty. This quick response by paramedics on fire engines stationed throughout the city provides more immediate medical care during those initial critical minutes of medical emergencies.

Fire Administration provides for the overall management of the Department. Administration is made up of a Fire Chief, a Deputy Chief, an Emergency Medical Services Officer and two administrative assistants.

Fire Prevention conducts plan checks, sprinkler system checks and building inspections, relative to fire prevention and fire protection systems. Fire investigations are also performed by fire prevention staff.

The Fire Department is also participates in the planning, development and promotion of disaster preparedness plans and programs for the entire City of Salinas.
